27 Feb 09

Everyday, regardless of my circumstances, I will focus on my goals. By doing at least one things each day, no matter how small, toward my goal of being a feature film director...is the key to success. For as Confucius said...The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Who would have thought I would be where I am now, in regards to my career as a film maker? Yet, I still have a long way to go. And it will be a life long journey. I will continue to set goals all my life.

Now, as for Te Whakapouri. For me to actually turn this into a film will be the greatest creative achievement of my life. And when I accomplish this goal, it will open many doors for me...many. But, it is going to take a lot of hard work and determination to do so. Determination and persistence are omnipotent. And that is 100% true. Success is not dependent on intellect, or money, or luck (although these things help), but above all, on determination. For when the shit hits the fan, things get tough, life deals the hard knocks, the losers give up while the winners carry on. And often when things seem their worst, those who keep on just a little longer, suddenly find success comes their way.

Up and at em...Atom Ant!

26 Feb 09 (cont')

Well the comp 'deal' has fallen through...It was meant to be a contra deal...but the other party has changed their mind. So that is that. Regardless of my circumstances I will keep on keeping on!

26 Feb 09

I will be going to look at the new comp today. Hopefully I will be up and editing again tonight! I will also be getting stuck into re-writing Te Whakapouri. I will be making some significant changes...really reducing it to the raw essence of what I desire it to be.

I met Annie yesterday. The Hui was really constructive. In particular, she asked me a patai (question) which has really made me think about the script and how I want it to be. She said, 'In a sentence, tell me what the script is about'. I replied, 'It is about Tana Tu, a Maori warrior prophet, who rises to greatness, but is undone by the sin of jealousy'. Now actually, that is not, in essence what the script is about. The script, in essence, is about Tana's relationship with Jehovah. Otherwise, if I went on what I said, the essence of the script would be about jealousy and betrayal...It is not. That is a B story. The A story is Tana's relationship with Jehovah...So I am really going to focus on making that happen. I feel that in my 1st script I just touch the surface in that regards.

Also, as I write the next script I will be cutting it to the bone, without losing the integrity of the creative aspects of the script, so that it is as cheap (props, location etc) as possible to make. Not that it is going to be a cheap movie, or look cheap, no. But that I will make it as cheap as possible to make.

Annie mentioned that a Red camera goes for about $20,000. This being so, I am simply going to buy a big red for the making of the movie, as it will actually cost more to simply hire it! A red Camera is basically a 35mm, but which is digital (so you save heaps on film stock, editing etc), and which can be downloaded straight to a computer to be edited on Final cut pro 6!

The crew itself, is going to be a skeleton crew, both for the trailer and the movie. This will not compromise the creative integrity of the story however. So the crew will be thus:
Writer - Me.
Director - Me.
Editor - Me (plus I may have a co-editor).
Producer -
Co-producer - Me.
Production manager - Me (for the trailer only).
1st AD - Top/Annie (?).
Cinematographer.
Focus puller.
Sound recordist.
Gaffer.
Gopher.

So I am now going to throw myself into this project 100%. I am going to write down clear cut goals with clearly defined dates and I am going to ACTION them. The two immediate goals are to get everything ready for the trailer (using scenes which are definitely going to be in the movie), plus start on the re-write.

there is only time for decisions.

25 Feb 09

Well...I have the option of undertaking the Editing course at Natcoll. I have to decide if I will do so or not. My purpose for doing so is that I advance my editing skills. I can do good basic editing, but, I am unable to do really advanced editing, which is where I would like to be.

Hopefully I will get that computer, although that is not definite now. I have Edius editing software licenced to me which I intended to use.

I have had only two responses from the emails I sent out to those who responded to my ad on The Big Idea. But that is kei te pai, as it sifts the real actors/crew from the wannabes.

24 Feb 09 (con't)

Well I have just had some excellent news...I will be scoring a computer soon, so I will be able to get into some serious editing once again. I am using Neo editing. It is only the basic package...but you can still do quality mahi (work) with it. I have heaps of footage to edit. So I am really looking forward to getting the computer.

I have sent a bulk email to everyone who responded to my ad on The Big Idea for the 48hr film comp...just to let them know where I am at this stage. I am going to do the best job that I can in that regards.

I pick up the DVD of the fights I filmed at the ABA on Saturday night. My collaborating partner said it looked really good...so that is kei te pai (good). I will email all the boxing clubs to let them know they can score copies off me.

24 Feb 09

Kia-ora everyone. Well I have changed my website completely so that it is focused on my film career and in particular my movie Te Whakapouri.

I will be undertaking a major rewrite ASAP. I intend to simplify the movie so that it is centralized to one main area (the forest/bush). I also intend to strengthen the central story of Tana's relationship with Jehovah, which I feel was not really dealt with in essence as I desire it to be.

I am currently studying a good book written by a independent film maker (who has written, directed and filmed three independent movies) and some of his advice is good, especially in regards to looking at the costs involved. So I intend to keep this in mind during the re-write, to keep costs down, without compromising the integral mana (creative dignity) of my story.

My film is in essence a artistic venture. It is not aimed at commercial success (like Hollywood), but I believe it can be financially successful (to a certain degree). Still, my aim is to tell my story in the way I want to tell it.

The 48hr film comp is not far off. I am trying to organise a crew and cast so that I am 100% prepared for the comp (8-10 May). I intend to make the best movie I can (both creatively and technically).

I do not know if I am a 'naturally talented' director, but, I believe I can be a very good one. Still, if the talent is there, I intend to realize it.

He aha to moemoea? What is your dream? Ask your wairua (spirit) that question...and whatever it answers...follow it.

As for myself...I shall pursue my quest of being a film maker...even when it leads to places of darkness and doubt. The main thing I need to do though from now on, is to be a lot more careful with whom I share my dream, for there are many dream stealer's in the world and they often come disguised as friends and whanau.

Waitangi Day. The most important day in Maoridom and what time does the so called Maori Television start? 3pm. That says a lot about their professionalism.

Anyway, what they do, or do not do, does not concern me as I never watch the channel anyway. So, enough said.

As for me, I am going to get my A into G.

(Cont') Now that I have moved to Auckland, I am going to re-organise my goals. The reason for the move was in order to advance my film career (plus a significant personal reason). There were very little opportunities for growth in Whangarei. Practically none. So I intend to focus 100% on my career.

It was a big move to come here. I intend to make it worthwhile. As far as I am concerned it is a brand new beginning and I will treat it as such. A opportunity for me to further develop my skills and knowledge.

I intend to sieze the opportunities and possibilities that exist here in Auckland. I will have a can do attitude and will be relentless in the pursuit of my dream.

5 Feb 09

Well...from now on this blog is going to be focused solely on my feature length movie...Te Whakapouri.

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

4 Feb 09

I am moving to Auckland today. The reality is, if I am to take my vision for my feature film (and my other film projects) to the next level, I need to step out of my comfort zone and move to where there are other visionaries. Simple as that. So even though I am apprehensive about the move, I am going to make it. And I am going to do so today.

The letter I personally handed out to all the main Maori organizations has had no response, so I am no longer going to bother with them at all. I will try other means to raise the putea I need for the movie.

The film industry here in Whangarei is ka mate...dead. There is no film industry. It is stagnant. And my creative wairua feels as if it is suffocating.

As for my Video Production Business, I will keep on track with that, but, in a different format, and in Auckland. I have a idea in mind which I shall pursue in Auckland and see what happens. But, I am not interested in doing T.V. ads, or weddings etc. My interest lies in making movies and documentaries, so I am going to pursue those things 100%.

I do not know what the future holds...But...I am the Master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.

28 Jan 09

The following is a letter I recently wrote and personally delivered to the main Maori organizations in Whangarei for tautoko for my movie Te Whakapouri. I have had one positive response thus far from Ms. Karen Sidney, a professional Maori writer, director and producer. She has given her full support, by stating she will offer what advice she can, plus, she will introduce me to those who may be able to assist. Feel free to read the letter in detail:

Tena koe:

RE MAORI FEATURE FILM

I write this letter to you, in all sincerity and truth. I ask only that you read it with a open ngakau me wairua (heart and spirit). I write to you as one Maori to another...nga tangata whenua o te Tai Tokerau.

We all have dreams, do we not? And when I say dreams, I do not mean the dreams that we have when we are asleep, but those that we have when we are awake. Yet, for many of us, our dreams have been desecrated, demeaned, destroyed by the realities of life. Remember the time when you were a child? Remember your dreams? As children we believed with an open heart that they would come true, yet for most of us, except the lucky few, they did not. Where we to blame? Sometimes, yes, through the choices we made, but sometimes it was also external forces beyond our control, which destroyed our hopes and dreams. But it does not matter how or why they were destroyed, they were. But, life being life, new dreams are always being born, and come true, if we choose to follow them, with all our heart, mind and soul.

Many of my dreams have become wrecked and ravaged by the effects of tide and time and life. But, now I have a new dream. And what is that dream? It is to film and direct a feature film I have written called Te Whakapouri and create the Tai Tokerau’s first ever Maori feature film. The film is about Tana Tu, a Maori warrior prophet, who rises to greatness, but is undone by the sin of jealousy. It is a powerful film script, with elements of jealousy, war, love, miracles etc (For a full synopsis, please visit my website http://www.tanatu.co.nz/ and go to the movie link). If you want to read the full script, please contact me and I will send it via email.

However, I know that to turn this dream into reality is going to take a great deal of determination and persistence and hard work. Not just a little bit, but immense hard work, because if you have a big dream, you have to put in the huge effort that is required to make it work. And I am prepared to do that. I am prepared to stay the course, until the dream becomes reality. My other dreams have fallen by the wayside, but, not this dream, no; this one is going to come true.

So I am writing this letter to you, to ask for your tautoko to help me make my film. Whether you help me as an iwi, hapu, roopu or individual, is up to you. All I ask is for your tautoko. And the tautoko I am after can come in many different ways. Advice, financial, use of resources, you (your roopu, hapu, iwi) coming on board, or whatever other support you would like to give. I also ask that you do not just read this, and then ignore it completely. No, I ask that you at least look at my website http://www.tanatu.co.nz/ (go to the movie link) and also respond to me. That is all I ask. After all, if Peter Jackson wrote to you about a film he is directing, would you not at least reply to him? And do I not have the same mana as him?

But even better, I would like your tautoko. Yes, tautoko is what I desire. I desire nga tangata whenua o Tai Tokerau, to tautoko me. For nearly one year now I have carried this burden by myself. I have had many obstacles (internal and external) to overcome. I have often felt disheartened and discouraged, but, i roto i toku ngakau me wairua, I have continued to believe in the power of my dream. I have gone through the official channels, Aho Whakaari, Film Commission etc. But, they are not interested, saying it is not ‘right’. But, that is their opinion. They said the same thing about Once were Warriors! So I am not listening to the critics, to the so called experts, to the naysayers and the dream stealer's, I am listening to the inner mana of my wairua, which tells me my film would be, should be, must be created. It must be created so I can tell the story of the struggle of our people to the world. So they can know of the great warrior prophets who led the resistance against the tauiwi.

Since I first began this hikoi, I have, through my own initiative, done many things to get tautoko for what I am doing. I have created my website, with a link to my film, put things onto ‘The Big Idea’, a creative communities site. I have also put something on You Tube (Which is on my website), plus communicated with the Film Commission etc. From all of this, I have had a number of responses from people in the film industry. A number of whom have read my script and said it was extremely powerful. However, their tautoko has been limited, as they either live in Auckland, Wellington, or even overseas! So our korero has mainly been through emails etc. None of them have been able to help financially. From these people, there are three who have shown 100% tautoko and have agreed to come on board 100% if/when some financing is available. The three are Grant, Top and Jan (I will only give their last names if you ask and they allow it, just for privacy reasons). Grant is a professional actor – Maori. He lives in Auckland. Top is a production manager/1st assistant director – Maori. She lives in Wellington. Jan is a professional cinematographer – German. He is currently in South Africa, but coming back to Aotearoa soon. I have only met Jan (before he went to South Africa for holiday) the once at the Whangarei library, when we went over the trailer for the film.

With their collaboration (and hopefully yours) my next immediate step is to make a professional three minute trailer. Now, you would have seen the trailers for movies right? Well, the reason for a trailer is to ‘capture’ the audience’s attention. Normally a trailer is made after the movie has been finished. But, it is increasingly common nowadays for film-makers to make a trailer in order to attract potential investors. For a trailer, with good little ‘snippets’ of the film, is able to show potential investors the possibilities for the movie. Now in order to make the trailer, I am going to need tautoko from you. The cost to make a simple 3 min professional trailer is considerable. However, the costs can be drastically reduced, if I am able to get support from nga tangata whenua o Tai Tokerau. For example, if I can get the actors etc to give their time for free (or a greatly reduced cost) this will halve the costs. If I can get sponsors for the costumes too, this will greatly cut costs and so on and on. However, there are some things that are a fixed price, like the camera (about $7,500 for the seven days needed for the shoot!).

Anyway, I realize that you have your own things that you have to do and that your life is taken up with your work and family etc, and that what I am saying may not even interest you in the slightest. It may also be that you cannot see the financial/business advantages of supporting my film. So there are all these reasons why you may not even be interested. But, all I ask is for you to also think of the possibilities and potential for not only the rangatahi but all of our people here in the Tai Tokerau. When this movie is made, our people are going to benefit. In every aspect of the movie, they will be employed first and foremost, before anyone else. This will be our movie. Not a tauiwi movie. The only time tauiwi will be used, is if it is absolutely essential. So, this is your opportunity, and the opportunity of your ropu, hapu, iwi to tautoko the production of Te Whakapouri. Also, even though there is risk in a feature film, if marketed properly, it has as good as any other business enterprise to succeed (I am working out the financial aspects of the movie, which will be fully prepared, once the trailer is completed and I try to get potential overseas investors on board. This is a very lengthy and time consuming part of the film).

So, how can you tautoko me and what I am trying to achieve in a practical way? Well, the first thing I would like to do, before anything else, is to form a ropu specifically for this project. You do not have to have any experience in the industry, just a passion to come on board and make this happen. Ideally I would like to try and form a ropu of 3-5 people from around Whangarei so we can meet on a regular basis (once a month). Secondly, I would like to ask if you have an office space I could utilize part-time, so I can fully focus on what I am doing. Also, if you have a spare computer, hooked up to the internet, and a local land line I can use, this would be appreciated (not asking for much!). But yes, this is just so I can fully focus on the mahi that is required. Thirdly, if you have any putea available to help me in what I am doing. Now, I am after two types of putea. The first is for the day to day running of things, admin, gas etc. The second is a more significant putea to fund the making of the trailer. I realize that may sound cheeky asking for cash straight up, but the reality is, I have been funding this by myself for nearly a year now with no financial help whatsoever, and in order for it to progress to a new level, I need financial assistance. In other words, cash, cold hard cash.

Finally. You have heard all my words. They have all been the truth. If you desire to korero with me, than please simply contact me. Kia-ora.

Naku noa

Na
Mr. Penehamine Neatana-Patuawa
Film-maker.

Mr. Netana-Patuawa has been practising on his new camera. It is a Panasonic MDV1000. It has a excellent Macro capability, plus very clear picture. Not HD, but 3CCD and 10x Zoom Ratio. Mr. Netana-Patuawa is happy with it. The main thing is that it has a 1yr warranty. He will begin work on a feature length film script (for Whangarei A.S.A.P.), which he will shoot over the holidays. Plus continue with his bizzo. He will also organise a fight night in Feb to raise funds for his feature film.

Mr. Netana-Patuawa is a poet, idealist, film-maker, revolutionary, entrepreneur, writer, actor. He is all the people he has ever been. He will never conform to the false standards of the world. If this means his business does not succeed...so be it!

Thought for the day...This above all, to thine own self be true, than to no other man can you be false.

Monday, November 24, 2008

25 Nov 08

Yesterday and today were good days for Mr. Netana-Patuawa's business...it is 100% back on track. From now on he is going to focus on the positive people who help him and to focus on the positive things that happen. He will dismiss completely the dream stealer's, take utu upon those who wrong him and laugh at his own idiotic mistakes.

Thought for the day...Learn to laugh at life and yourself, otherwise you will never get out alive.

24 Nov 08

Mr. Netana-Patuawa is committed to his business 100%. That is his sole focus.

Saturday, November 22, 2008

23 Nov 08

Mr. Netana-Patuawa is writing this from the Whangarei library. He is resolved in his decision to pursue his dream of being a film-director. yesterday and the days prior his mind was filled with insecurities and doubts...but a calming sense of destiny is now with him. he will do it...he will direct his first feature film before the age of 40yrs old...So that gives him till the 24th Mar 09 to do so. he will face the future with confidence and courage...filled with the wairua me mana me kaha...spirit and dignity and courage...of his tupuna (ancestors) and te Ariki Ihu Karaiti (the Lord Jesus Christ).

Amen...So be it.

Friday, November 21, 2008

22 Nov 08

Mr. Netana-Patuawa went to the screening of the movie, 'Flat Life', by the Aitken brothers. They are 16-17yrs old. Mr. Netana-Patuawa acknowledges their success. They will one day be top directors in Aotearoa...this is a certainty.

As for Mr. Netana-Patuawa's hikoi (journey)...well...he is going to succeed. He is going to direct a feature film one day. Hell...if a 16 and 17yr old can do it...he can...and will too!

Anyway...the footage from the short movie shoot was pakaru (no good)...due to the Canon XL1, which Mr. Netana-Patuawa gave back to Bill Hohepa for a full refund. He has bought another camera. So that was a complete waste of time.

It is easy to become discouraged...Mr. Netana-Patuawa has many obstacles...external and internal...which he has to overcome on a daily basis. Still, he will keep on keeping on. He will believe in himself and in the power of his dreams. No one will rob him of those...especially not the dream stealer's (of which there are many in this world).

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

19 Nov 08

Today Mr. Netana-Patuawa will be dropping fifty of his books off to the local businesses in order to try and raise some capital. He gave the Canon XL1 back to Bill Hohepa, but there was a hold up with the money. Once it comes through it will be spent on a new camera.

Carpe Diem...Seize the Day!

Monday, November 17, 2008

18 Nov 08

Mr. Netana-Patuawa has rejoined the gym. He is purchasing a new camera tomorrow, as he had to get a refund for his Canon XL1 as it was not going properly. It is deeply saddening, as it was a beautiful camera. Still, he will realize his dreams. Just a temporary challenge!

Sunday, November 16, 2008

17 Nov 08

Tana Tu Productions is back on track. Mr. Netana-Patuawa is recommitting to his dream of being a feature film director...It is easy to lose sight of what one wants to do, because of negative people and negative thoughts.

Friday, November 14, 2008

15 Nov 08

The circumstances which arise that predominant a situation that assists a person in destroying all obstacles in his path, resides within the framework of his mental energies.

Thursday, November 13, 2008

14 Nov 08

Mr. Netana-Patuawa has determined that he will commit to the P documentary 100%. This begins today. Right now in fact. He will focus on the mahi (work) that needs to be done, than set about doing it.

He does not, nor ever will, work as the same as mainstream tauiwi (non-Maori) society, with their rigid rules of time frames etc. He works in the manner and style of the himself. He has, and will, continue to do so. However, he has decided to change his style, so that it is a new style of working, which suits himself, but will ensure the success of his business.

Thought for the day...Believe in yourself.

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

13 Nov 08

How a person handles themselves when faced with adversity will signify whether or not they will succeed or fail in any particular enterprise.

As for Mr. Netana-Patuawa's enterprises...they will succeed...regardless of whatever personal obstacles he may have to face and overcome...he will succeed. This ia a fact.

Most importantly of all...he will do positive thinking...even though in this world of kino (evil) it is easy to focus on the negative...the Paipera Tapu says we must focus on what is positive...especially if we are too succeed.

Thought for the day...No guts, no glory.

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

11 Nov 08

Not far till the end of the year...and what has a man achieved when all is said and done? It seems as a man grows older, his life flashes before him faster and faster like a speeding bullet. The glory of his youth is behind him and when he tries to capture the fire of his younger dreams...they have often turned to ashes...cold and gray where once they were filled with light and hope and faith.

Anyway...enough of nostalgia...it serves no purpose. One can only focus on the future and what is happening tomorrow. And as for tomorrow...it is what it is. Tomorrow. A distant land in the future.

Thought for the day...So we beat on...boats against the current...borne back ceaselessly into the past.

10 Nov 08

Monday. A new week. Mr. Netana-Patuawa has always liked Mondays more than any other day of the week. It is like the start of a brand new day. Filled with promise and hope.

Part of the short film has been made in Auckland. Now Mr. Netana-Patuawa has to finish the rest of the shots here in Whangarei. In all probability he will not be putting it on You Tube or sending off to any of the short film competitions as he realizes that it will simply not be good enough to do so. This is NO reflection on the actors and cameraman (who did a excellent job), but rather, on Mr. Netana-Patuawa's haphazard organizational skills for this particular project. Still, it was a excellent learning experience as to what to do (and not to do) next time. It is his first short movie he has made in five years, so he is not overly concerned with the fact that it falls far short of his ideal that he had envisioned for it. Technically he is confident that the shots themselves will have come out kei te pai, even though we only used naturally light, plus the sound will be technically good too (kia-ora Toaiva...our cameraman from Maori TV). So Mr. Netana-Patuawa will work on that part time, it should take about one month to finish the rest of the shots and edit.

The narcotic P project begins in earnest today. Mr. Netana-Patuawa is going to commit to that particular project 100% beginning today. It is far easier to make a documentary than it is to make a short movie! All you need is a camera! Make certain the sound is good and that there is good lighting, and Bob's your Uncle! You do not need anything or anybody else. Simple as that. Well, the only other thing you need is whatever it is you are going to record about...that is the subject content...whether that be animals or people etc. As for Mr. Netana-Patuawa, he is interested in people...what makes them tick...their flaws of character, their ideals, their dreams, their uniqueness and everything else that makes them who they are. So his documentaries will be focused on people and their exploits etc. So this P documentary should be interesting to make and record etc. Very much so.

Thought for the day...Up and atom Atom Ant!

9 Nov 08

The Maori Party only managed to secure one more seat...instead of the anticipated seven. Still, Mr. Netana-Patuawa cast his votes...now it is over...it is time to get on with the job.

Filmed the short movie yesterday. Thanks to everyone who participated.

8 Nov 08

Today Mr. Netana-Patuawa will cast two votes...Party vote for the Maori Party...List vote for Mr. Hone Harawira. Hopefully the Maori party will win all seven Maori seats! Ka pai!

Have decided to shoot the film today, instead of tonight, if Mr. Netana-Patuawa can get hold of the leading lady...and if she can do it earlier, instead of tonight. It will be better to do it today. The wairua will still be there. So that is the plan.

Cannot wait to get home!

7 Nov 08

Mr. Netana-Patuawa had a choice korero on the phone today with a representative from West Pac bank...a very friendly young lady. It always picks someone up when you speak to friendly and nice people.

Mr. Netana-Patuawa has been majorly stressing about staying here in Auckland...horrible place...will be so happy when he leaves. He will be making his short movie apopo (tomorrow). There is also a film festival in Manakau which he would like to go to if he receives his putea (finances). Otherwise the situation will be very precarious! To say the least!

Still, it is all good. The movie will be choice to make...a challenge!

5 Nov 08

Quick blog...in Aucks...camera is in good working order. Hui cancelled at Aho Whakaari (internal politics). Short movie Aroha on track...auditions tonight at K rd. Have a camera man, Mr. Netana-Patuawa will be acting the part of Gangsta.

31 Oct 08

Mr Netana-Patuawa is back on track in regards to his business and feature length film. Even though he has had a temporary set back, he is determined to persist in his endeavours regardless of the obstacles. By having a clear vision of his desired dream, enables him to overcome all adversity.

Mr. Netana-Patuawa missed out on the contract (they decided to film it themselves...we shall see how hoary that looks!). Still, that is yesterday. Full focus is on today. He has rearranged his website. He will be making a business ad for his production company to be placed on his website, so that others can look at it for a example of his work.

Thought for the day...A creative entrepreneur is a calculated risk taker who is open to opportunities and ideas, but whose passion is not blind.

29 Oct 08

Mr. Netana-Patuawa will have a attitude of success...not defeatism! Te Whakapouri is not unattainable. It is achievable. Toward this end, he is calling a Hui next week in Auckland at the offices of Aho Whakaari...the Maori film and television office. He realizes he needs to get some people on board who want to develop this concept too. Because it is too big for one man to do alone...many hands make the burden easier to bare. Every major film, such as Te Whakapouri, requires a concerted effort of at least two or more people on board. So, this is what is going to happen.
Have a Hui today at 9 a.m. about a possible contract for a video job for Mr. Netana-Patuawa's business. It will be his first contract. Hopefully he gets it! He will try his best anyway to secure the contract...if he does he will do a 100% job! A 100% professional job!

27 Oct 08

Well...Mr. Netana-Patuawa does not even know if anyone even reads this blog...or looks at his website.
Today is the 27th of Oct 08...so this gives Mr. Netana-Patuawa exactly 65 days to write, produce, shoot and direct a short movie. If people can make short movies in 48 hrs, than he can make one in 65 days!
The key to a excellent movie is the manipulation of light, effects and sound...they have to be done in such a way as to inspire the wairua (soul) of a person. The most effective movies and documentaries are those that touch people's ngakau me wairua (heart and soul).
As for Te Whakapouri...it seems like a distant dream...unattainable and impossible. However, one way it could be done, is to shoot it with actors and actresses who are willing to do it for free...for the trailer that is. Plus, for Mr. Netana-Patuawa to shoot it himself with his camera. No-one else...just himself. Than this way, it would be self funded. The only costs would be kai, travel, prop hire and the costumes...but Mr. Netana-Patuawa could even look for a sponsor for these things too. Still, how would it come out? Mr. Netana-Patuawa believes it is better to do whatever he does diligently, rather than some half baked project. Still, it is a possibility to do it this way. Who knows, it might even come out right! So, that is just one way of looking at it.
As for Mr. Netana-Patuawa's business...it is not happening right now...his camera, Canon XL1 is in the shop getting fixed, won't be back for at least another week. It may cost hundreds to get fixed. The capture port is being fixed.
Mr. Netana-Patuawa has internal issues which he is also in the process of attempting to overcome. His inner demons as it were. Still, these are common to all those who are in pursuit of heroic ideals.
Thought for the day...Let us dare to dream the impossible dream and to fight the unbeatable foe.

23 Oct 08

The other night Mr. Netana-Patuawa went to the short film festival here in Whangarei. It has inspired him to make a short movie ASAP.

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

22 Oct 08

Mr. Netana-Patuawa submitted his proposal to make a documentary about P (narcotic speed). So he will find out at the end of next month if he receives the funding or not.

He will also be focusing on another documentary he has in mind, which will be called, 'A interview with Benjamin Nathan, the man who smashed the America's cup.' The man who did it is a very interesting character, who has played many different roles in life and acted many different parts...award winning poet, actor, film-maker, inmate, criminal, professional boxer, entrepreneur, pimp and te mea te mea te mea (so on and on and on). So he is committed to both projects 100%.

As for Te Whakapouri...well...Mr. Netana-Patuawa will need to form a core ropu who want to make it...to raise the cash and do it. It has fizzled out for now...ha ha ha...but not completely! Still, it will require a team to bring it to realization. The difference with the doco's is that Mr. Netana-Patuawa can make them basically on his own. All they require are good sound, lighting and composition (for the interviews). So he is going to get stuck into doing them. He will complete them by next year.

Some people take years to make doco's or write books and plays etc...not Mr. Netana-Patuawa...he is a mover and shaker!

Thought for the day...The world still has it's glittering prizes for those with the courage to seize them.

Saturday, October 18, 2008

19 Oct 08

Mr. Netana-Patuawa is seriously considering moving to Auckland. If he is to be successful as a film-maker he needs to go where there are others who are doing the same mahi. Still, that is a huge move, going to Aucks.
People may think this is being impetuous, but, Mr. Netana-Patuawa is not enjoying the video production business side of things. It is ho-ha...and the way he sees it, he will not do mahi which he does not want...or like to do. Simple as that. His passion is to make movies. Still, is he a natural director? Can he teach himself to be one? He believes so. Still, you either have natural abilities or you do not. Mr. Netana-Patuawa believes he does. Time will tell.

Friday, October 17, 2008

18 Oct 08

Winston Peters is coming to Whangarei tomorrow...so Mr. Netana-Patuawa might go and see him...see what he is all about. He is like a Phoneix that fella...Always rising above political situations which would destroy lesser men.
Will definitely vote for the Maori Party. Both votes. They are the only ones who truly represent Maori. So hopefully they will claim all seven Maori seats.

17 Oct 08

Mr. Netana-Patuawa watched the Northland amateur film competition last night. It was choice to go too. saw some good shorts and some crappy ones. The best one was a musical directed by Kelly Johnson (main actor from Goodbye Pork Pie). It was very well directed in the opinion of Mr. Netana-Patuawa. It received the biggest clap by far.

Watching them has re motivated Mr. Netana-Patuawa to get going and make a short movie himself. So he is going to do that. Perhaps instead of focusing his business on making projects he has no interest in i.e. Business ads etc. He should just focus on those things that he really wants to do. He will need to seriously consider that.
As for Te Whakapouri. Worked on a redraft the other night. Also had a email from Grant who wants to play the part of Tana Tu. So the fire is still smouldering. The reality is, all it will take is cash. Cold hard cash. Simple as that. So, what Mr. Penehamine Netana-Patuawa needs to do, is to make some cash by whatever means is necessary.
Thought for the day...Men who try to do something and fail, are infinitely better off than those who do nothing and succeed.

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

15 Oct 08

Today Mr. Netana-Patuawa (the writer of this blog and who from this time forth shall refer to himself in the third person) had a korero (talk) with Kelly Johnson, who was one of the main actors on the feature film Goodbye Pork pie, which was a smash hit in the early eighties. He is now a lawyer, as well as acting in local productions with the Whangarei theatre.
Whangarei has three theatre organizations, but not one film organization. Mr. Netana-Patuawa would try to organize one, but, he is unsure of the response. So for now he will taiho (wait). Anyway, Kelly wants to direct a feature film one day...and Mr. Netana-Patuawa knows he will be fully committed to such a project. How good of a director he is, who knows, only Kelly.
As for Te Whakapouri...it is time to recommit again. A major rewrite of the script is going to be the first step. The first two are still too 'scattered', too many characters and scenes. So it is going to be 'tightened'. So Mr. Netana-Patuawa will begin on that tonight. He will look at doing two hours per night, if he feels like doing more, he will, otherwise, it will be that definite time frame. Set hours, set work.
Now as for the business, it has been going for three weeks and three days. Mr. Netana-Patuawa, to be honest, has slackened off his original enthusiasm. He was all gung ho the first two weeks, but now he has slackened off a bit! Still, he has achieved some worthy factors, but he also needs to re motivate himself in that regards as well. He 'cold called' numerous businesses. But, will work out a new strategy for that, as it is too hard mentally and emotionally. He also filmed a wananga on the weekend, from which he has had a few sales. So that is his first serious paid job for his business.
Last night he had a raruraru (conflict) with the Arts Promotion Trust. He had a bit of a haka boogie with the chairman of the board! Ha ha ha. So that avenue is cut off.
So, the blog shall be back on track regularly. Plus the focus on the film project.
Thought for the day...Everything comes to him who HUSTLES while he waits.

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

9 Oct 08

Well Mr. Netana-Patuawa posted a couple more vids on You Tube, so that is kei te pai. Nothing major, just some small projects he did this year to tutu around with. He is determined to get back on track in regards to his film project...for it is easy to lose sight of one's goals. So he will need to get his A into G and get going hard out! And he will do precisely that.
A person who succeeds, is the one who has a clear goal and keeps at it relentlessly. Mr. Netana-Patuawa knows that for a fact. No-one will do it on his behalf, he must and will do it on his own behalf. No more pissing around, no more excuses, only resolute determination! In a world where death is the hunter my friend, there is no room for regrets or doubts...only action!

8 Oct 08.

Tena koutou katoa...well I received word back from Te Paepae Ataata about my script...they will not support it in development. They gave some criticism, some of which I agree with, some of which I do not.

Anyway, I am recommitting to this project, however, I realize it will take a lot more work than I initially expected and that I was too hasty in some of my objectives.

The reality is, what this project requires is cold hard cash. Simple as that.

Thought for the day...Let's get it on!

24 Sep 08.

Well...I just wanted to say that I hope to focus again on my movie...once things have gotten into a rhythm. I am even thinking about turning it into a play as well. See what happens. But only if i get the funding to do so.

For now I will focus on my bizzo.

Friday, September 19, 2008

20 sep 08.

Well...I finally have my gears for my production company! Whew! Got a 2nd hand Canon XL1, plus tripod and computer and edit software. So am officially in bizzo! Anyway, I will be focusing hard out on that for a while. That has to come first for a while. Unfortunately, the feature film has lost it's momentum (for now). It is still there, it is still a vision, but, unless I can raise the $30,000 with a big contract, there will be no trailer as early as I had hoped...but you never know! One thing about life, things often happen unexpectedly. But for now my main focus has to be on my bizzo.

Anyway, went to Aucks...and I hated every second there! Got the gears and was off! Ha ha ha. Once the bizzo is a bit more steady, I will refocus on the film. It is still there for me, still what I plan to do. But, more long term.

Thought for the day...Keep on keeping on!

12 Sep 08.

I have finished burning my fourth DVD project for the Whangarei TV station.  It is a ten min piece about the Whangarei buses and when they had their last day.  So I am happy with it, as it was taken on my mini DV camera.  So far everything I have done has been done by myself with my mini DV camera.  No sound man, no lighting man...just me!

Te Whakapouri is sort of at a standstill at the mo'.  Stagnation for want of a better word!  Ha ha ha.  In the beginning I expanded heaps of energy...and now I have sort of puttered out.  Does this mean it is the end?  Hell no!  Ha ha ha.  Nah, all it means is that I will regroup, re-plan, while still working toward my main goal.  My main focus is to get some key players on board. So I will keep plodding along...until the fire returns!  It is like any enterprise really, there will be valleys and peaks all along the way.  The main thing is to keep on keeping on.

Thought for the day...Many give up, who if they had just hung on a little longer, would have succeeded.

10 sep 08.

Well...just to let everyone know that yes this movie is still going ahead! I have only just begun a...things take time! Ha ha ha. Anyway picked up the camera from 155. It is a professional camera. Someone has been mucking around with the sound! Ho-ha (Maori word for nuisance). Anyway have written up my action plan which I will be implementing next week.

Thought for the day...The world still has it's glittering prizes for those with the courage to seize them!

9 Sep 08.

Yesterday I was able to burn my footage using Studio Pro DV.  I have been using iDVD, but for some reason it has not been responsive.  So I used Studio Pro.  It was very simple to use.

Today I will download whanau footage which I plan to make into a full length funny movie.  I use the final cut pro editing system.  I just use the basic principals, as it is in essence a very technical editing system.  Still, I am getting better at it.

I feel very restless, I just want to get things done...like yesterday!

Thought for the day...Come to the edge, he said. They said, we are afraid we will fall. Come to the edge, he said. They came. He pushed them. And they flew away.

8 Sep 08.

Well...I have a definite short film in mind, which I am going to shoot ASAP.  I have tried to do two other short films this year, P (about the drug P and it's effect on young people) and Shifty & Shorty (a comedy about two ex cons).  However, through lack of actors (being based here in Whangas they are rare to come by!) it has not happened. The movie I am definitely going to make will be based on my award winning poem Aroha...Love (so I will be getting my actors from Aucks and shooting there, this will ensure it is made!).  I am going to make it free-style. With just my actors and me on a semi-pro HDV cam, with a directional mic.  I will just use a 'loose' storyboard...nothing else.  My idea is to do a freestyle improvisational video...one that is not hindered by a huge crew or a set script.  Now I don't know how it is going to come off...it may be really bad, or choice as.  But I am going to give it a go.  I am going to draw up the storyboard ASAP. Advertise on The Big Idea.  Get my actors, shoot in Aucks, edit it at Northtec, than put it on You Tube and submit it to the film festivals.  Simple as that.

I have also decided that I am not just a film director, but, in actuality, a Creative Artist, poet, biographer, playwright, actor, scriptwriter, theatre director.  I am all of those things as well, so I will also be getting back into them.  All this year I have focused primarily on film-making and I have found that I have not been using my creativity and potential in my other creative areas.  Of course, I will be continuing in my feature film, but I plan to form a team of others who want to do it with me, rather than slogging away on my own, as I have been doing so far.  Of course Top has been helping me, but with her being so far away (windy Welly), she has agreed to be the 1st A.D., allowing me to get someone closer on board as my Production Manager.  Still, thanks heaps to Tops for her tautoko (support) so far!  To do this I may eventually need to relocate to Auckland!

Thought for the day...This above all, to thine own self be true, than to no other man can you be false.

6 sep 08.

Have moved house...extremely stressful. I also have a concise plan drawn up for the trailer.

Thought for the day...JUST DO IT!

Thursday, September 4, 2008

5 Sep 08.

Well I moved into a new pad last night.  It is sweet as.  My base of operations.  I will now be focusing 100% on the development of the trailer.  I will look upon it as a short film.  So I will be implementing the following ASAP:

1) Storyboard (script is done).
2) Scene Breakdown Sheet.
3) Shot log.
4) Location scout.
5) Finances.
6) Props etc.

So, everyday will be spent wisely, undertaking this mahi.  I need to find someone in and around Whangarei to come on board.

Thought for the day...Imagination is more powerful than willpower.

4 sep 08 (cont).

Well had a bit of a kip...so feel refreshed. Taking Doodle to the vets (found him last night outside in the garden!).

Watched a BRILLIANT short movie called, 'Being Bad'. 10/10. Cinematography was AWESOME. Story was superb. Riveted, from beginning to end. About three street kids, one a thief, one a dreamer, one a call-boy. Man, it was so choice a. Director was Laurence Coriat (who also wrote it). Producer was Norma Burke. Cinematographer was Natasha Braier.

After watching that, it has inspired me to get my A into G and do a short movie before the year is out!!! And I am going too!!!

Another thought for the day...Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.

4 Sep 08.

It is 3:40 a.m. as I write this. I am worried about our cat Doodle, who has a bad wound on his throat. I will take him to the vets today. But, he has disappeared! He always sleeps with us, and this is the first time this has happened, so I am very worried. I will go and look for him again soon. He is a very friendly cat.

As for the movie...well I will be focusing on making a short movie to finish this year off. I would still like to do Shifty and Shorty. I finished a 3 min 'filler in' for Whangarei TV station. So I am happy about that. Nothing great, but hey, it was on my little mini DV! My camera work is very good now. My eye for lighting has improved a great deal too. Still need to work on sound. For now my focus will be the 3min music video. I plan to do that 100%.

Thought for the day...Far better it is to dare mighty deeds and fail, than to be one of those cold and timid souls, who live in a gray twilight of nothingness and never have the courage to dare at all.

3 Sep 08 (cont).

Update:  I have just received my first donation from Ngaroimata Winiata of Kahuhura Gallery in Gisborne!  Kia-ora...too much! Thanks heaps Ngaroimata for your faith in me and my dream! Things are looking up!  Ha ha ha.  So that is really choice.  Still a long way to go...but...I will get there.  As Confucious said...The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

3 Sep 08.

I still have not heard back from my bizzo plan for my production bizzo. Anyway, look forward and move on.

It is 5:45 a.m. Have been up since 5 a.m. I will start my exercise regime at 6 a.m. Just a light workout 30mins. I plan to get back to full strength, 2hrs per day, 6days per week, like I use to do. I intend to start up boxing again and perhaps doing jeet kune do (Bruce Lee's fighting art).
This time though, I am going to be 100% committed to what I am doing a.

The feature film. Well, I have decided to start doing fundraising to raise the $30,000 I need a. This is the best way to get things done. So, I am going to form a core team, and just start doing it. No more mucking around. Time is of the essence. Some people have said I am doing some things too fast. True, in regards to the financial aspect and the budget etc. But, I am learning, so I will keep plodding along a. It will happen. Three years I give it. In the meantime. I will focus on short movies. That is going to be my focus. I intend to make a short movie ASAP.

I still have a music vid I am doing with some young fellas a. So I will be focusing on that too. Plus, I have to do the editing for my Matariki footage (shot with my little mini DV cam.

Thought for the day...Success breeds success.

1 Sep 08.

Well it is 7:56 a.m. I have been up since 6 a.m. I made my babe brekky...Coffee (beans have to be crushed etc) and spirilina. I then washed and dried the dishes from last nights kai (tea)...Babe cooked the most awesome meatballs, chips and broccoli with carrots.

Anyway...I hope to hear back from Raina today. It is a waiting game now. Hopefully it is good news...I will be disappointed if it is not. Funny though, I have not been concerned about the grant until since last week. Now I just want to either get it or not...so I can get on with things a.

I will be going to Aucks either way...I am going to sell my books in Ponsonby door to door. It is a good place to sell books. The houses are very close together and the people are usually quite friendly...plus they have cash to spend!

When (if) the grant comes through, I will let this blog know. Thought for the day...Our thoughts create our reality...We are the Masters of our fate...the Captains of our soul.

31 Aug 08.

I find out apopo (tomorrow) if I will be getting my business grant to start up my Video production Company. The grant will enable me to get a semi-pro camera, tripod and computer (with editing software). I will then be in bizzo! It's been a long, hard slog to get the financing. So far this year I have applied for:
1) ASB business grant ($150,000) to start up a Video course for At Risk youth. Turned down.
2) Creative NZ grant ($5,000) to finish off my play Tana Tu. Fifth year and fifth time I have applied (five different projects). Fifth time I have been turned down.
3) AMP Scholarship grant ($10,000). Turned down.
4) Book grant ($1,000) to publish 100 books. Turned down (I ended up getting a loan, which I am still paying off!).
5) Video Production Company Grant ($10,000)...Here's hoping!!!

When (if) I start the bizzo up, my kaupapa will be to respect people (customers or not) and to work hard. I will be putting the film in the hands of a producer (once I secure one). But, the film will immediately come first, once financing comes through. The Video company is my bread and butter stuff and to keep my skills developed and up to play. The film is my dream...but dreams don't give you kai! Thought for the day...If you reach for the stars you may not get them, but you will not get mud either.

6:37 a.m. Thought for the day...Let us dare to dream the impossible dream.

Monday, August 25, 2008

26 Aug 08.

Tena koutou katoa...Well it is 4:18 a.m. and I just finished sending off heaps of emails to all the actors/actresses who responded to my Expressions of Interest ad on The Big Idea. In hindsight I should have waited till the money was raised and it was DEFINITELY on before putting a ad on there, but hey, I have never done this sort of thing before, and being only human, make mistakes (well that is my excuse anyway! Ha ha ha).
Yesterday was not very positive. My hui with a potential financial investor was cancelled (I am not going to bother contacting them again, if they are serious about investing in the movie, they will get back to me). One of the people I hoped to get on board changed his mind. I also lost out on a contract with Fulton and Hogan, to do a video for them. The only bright spot, was that Jan, a professional cinematographer, has definitely committed to the movie. Ka pai! That is really good news a! So I hope to have a bio on my website about him.
Yesterday I sent a number of emails to distributors. Plus I emailed a German Production Company. I will keep plugging away. Thought for the day...If you always put limits on yourself and what you can do, physical or anything, you might as well be dead. It will spread into your work, your morality, your entire being. There are not limits, only plateaus. But you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you - Bruce Lee.

25 Aug 08.

It is 6:35 a.m. as I write this. I feel really good about the movie...I received a excellent email from Emma Barnett...Thanks mate! It really boosted my confidence a...Even though I am positive about this whole project...Like any normal person I have periods of self-doubt...So when I receive such a positive email...it strengthens my resolve.
I have been studying, 'Mind Power' written by John Kehoe. I am applying it's principals to this venture, by positively visualizing a successful outcome.
I was busy yesterday, emailing prospective distributors, plus also making contact with overseas investors for my movie. I will need to draw up a strong production plan, plus have some definite distributors on board, as well as have a strong production crew, plus cast. These are the four main factors to attract potential investors on board. I will also be actively seeking a co-producer.
Thought for the day...Success breeds success.

22 Aug 08.

Tena koutou katoa...well I finished my blurb for You Tube which I hope to put online this weekend with a link to my website.  I also intend making changes to the website.  I am not that happy with the video (for You Tube) however, as I asked the camera operator to do a medium close up throughout the entire video (shoulders and head) but she might not of heard me properly.  So I have created a border around it, to cut out certain parts I did not like.  Still, it is ok.  The main thing is people will be able to see me.  I will be using lateral/creative thinking to come up with a new concept to raise the money for my trailer.  This is something I will be getting onto this weekend.

I have a had a positive response from the ad I put on the Big Idea.  True, I have not yet raised the capital, but the reason for the ad is to have everything in place once the finances are raised.

The more I become involved in this...the more I feel confident of it's ultimate success.  The main thing is to focus on one step at a time.  Thought for the day...You are today where your thoughts have brought you.  You will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.  You cannot escape the consequences of your thoughts.  In your hands will be placed the exact results of your thoughts.  Whatever your present reality, you will fall, remain or rise according to your thoughts.  Your thoughts create your reality.  To change your reality, change your thoughts.

21 Aug 08.

Well...another day, another blog! Ha ha ha. Anyway I filmed my piece for You Tube which I will be editing apopo (tomorrow) and putting online, so it can be linked to my website. I filmed it at the Whangarei TV station. I did it professionally (lights and background etc)...so people will know I am serious about what I am doing.
I have a hui (meeting) on Monday with a potential investor...so fingers crossed. Plus half of all profit from my video production company (weddings etc) will be put directly into my savings account until all the putea is raised.
I have produced, directed and edited two shows for the Whangarei TV station. A small 3 min doco about the Tibetan peace march, plus a 10 min doco about the Maori writers who came to town. They came out alright, considering I only had my camera (and no lighting or sound man). I am also putting a proposal forward for a regular half hour show about positive Maori talent to be shown on Whangarei TV (if that is successful I will use the money toward my trailer, than once the full amount is raised, focus 100% on that and sub contract my other show out).
I re-edited my advert on The Big Idea. I had a 'abrupt' email from a fella (and he wants to audition for a main part!) so decided I needed to clarify issues that he raised. I know this is going to be a challenge to make...but I also know it can and will be done. I am PASSIONATE about the script...it is powerful and a story I am determined to tell...simple as that. Also, so MANY movies are made everyday...and each requires financing. It will take hard work and effort...and above all...faith and belief in myself and those who want to make it happen with me.
Thought for the day...Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.

20 Aug 08.

Today I picked up a homeless man...in his fifties...he was hitching from Whangarei to Wellsford. All he had was a pack on his back. I asked him why he was homeless at the age of fifty...and he just said he could not get on the dole or find a job. Even though I found that hard to believe, I did not judge him, as who am I too judge him? I gave him $5 for a kai and dropped him off at the service station (just past where I have to turn in). I shook his hand and wished him luck. But as I pulled away and watched his lonely figure walking down the road...I felt a sense of sadness...for did not he deserve to have a home to call his own? I mean how rugged that must be...never knowing where you are going too sleep or where your next kai is going to come from. So I feel BLESSED. I have ALL my whanau and friends and everyone I know. There are so many opportunities and possibilities out there...that we must seize them whenever we can.
Anyway, on a more better note...I finished editing the, 'Maori Writers on Tour' for the Whangarei TV. It is 10 Min's long. It is alright...considering I only had a camera and no proper lights etc.
Tomorrow I will make my 5 Min spiel to be put on You Tube, which I will be linking to my website on the weekend. I intend to add some more pages...I hope to put Top on there and Jan too...if he comes on board.
Thought for the day...I felt sorry for myself cause I lost a shoe...until I met a man who had no foot...Be thankful for what you have people!

19 Aug 08.

Word up everyone...or whoever reads this! Ha ha ha. Well...I was exhausted last night...crashed out early as a. I seem to be doing heaps...but not making any real progress...but I think that is just the way I feel a.
I went to the Hui Taumata today at the Kingsgate Hotel...The turnout was quite small...but the speakers were quite good. I had the opportunity to have a korero about my film. I also met the CEO who knows someone who is a independent producer...so he is going to talk to his friend about my project.
I realize that to raise the $30,000.00 I am going to have to come up with some revolutionary concepts a...Perhaps doing a regular slot on you tube and trying to get coca cola to sponsor it...something like that a. Something involving video...that is the key. Or perhaps not. Perhaps something entirely different and outside the square...So I am going to start brainstorming until I actually come up with the idea.
Still...it is only early days a...this is a long process which may take several years! So this will be one long running blog!!! Ha ha ha.
Anyway...the main thing is not to take it too seriously a...to have some laughs along the way...or what is the point of it? So yeh...I am going to do that a. Ka kite ano.

17 Aug (cont).

www.tanatu.co.nz Well...I am embarking on a new journey...one of self-development. One in which I am going to tap into and use the awesome power and potential within my hingaro (mind)...We have the right to succeed...and the power of the universe will help us do so, if we ask for it's awhi me tautoko...help and support.

17 Aug 08.

It is miserable weather as I write this. I have the fire going...and just got back from having a sauna.
Yesterday I sent over 55 emails to local Maori bizzos to solicit their tautoko for this venture. On Tuesday there is a hui in Whangarei which I will attend. I wrote up the expenses for the trailer...and it came over. So will be making the necessary cuts etc.
Top will be getting hold of Temuera Morrison and offering him the part of Chief Patako...also going to see if Tania from Shorty St is interested in auditioning for the role of Aroha.
I am reading the book Mind Power by John Kehoe...and will be implementing those principals in all aspects of my life. So I will be practising positive visualisation for this goal in a consistent way.
Will be editing tomorrow. Filmed the Maori tour that came here (writers, singers and poets), so I hope to have that finished by the end of the week, so it can be put on the Whangarei TV Station.

15 Aug 08.

In a way, making this movie is my own personal Mt Everest. I have to plan it properly, solicit support, plus do all the hard work that is involved with it. It will require enormous determination and persistence to pull it off. Can it be done? Yes, it is done everyday...in fact more than everyday. Over 6,000 feature films are made every year throughout the world!
So, it is realistic and achievable.
The key is to undertake one step at a time. Also, even though in the past I have been satisfied when I have done my best (even though I have not succeeded)...In this, only success will satisfy me.
The key, I believe, is to keep the vision of what I want to make and create CLEARLY in mind. To visualize it consistently until it is made into reality.
Thought for the day...Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, can be achieved.

14 Aug 08.

Well...it is 10:48 p.m. as I write this blog. The fire is blazing and Doodle the cat is outside somewhere. He has been peeing inside so has been relegated outside for now.
I spoke to Jan a German cinematographer...We had a good korero about the trailer. He told me it will be a good idea to use a 'Red' camera...so I will go with that. If things work out between us, than I will ask him on board, as I loved his work that I saw...the composition and mood was ka pai.
Top is still on track with her mahi. Found out she is whanau (family) a cousin...so kia-ora cuz!
I will be spending all weekend sending out emails to the Maori businesses in Whangarei to solicit their support. I have been given a list of all the local Maori businesses...so I will be busy this weekend!
Anyway...thought for the night...Persistence and determination are omnipotent.

13 Aug 08.

I am really tired right now. Have had FIVE hui today in regards to my movie and production company. It is all about networking. Plus I edited for a few hours beforehand! So will keep it brief. Anyway thought for the day...believe in yourself and in the power of your dreams and they will come true.

12 Aug 08.

Tena koutou katoa.  Hi everyone.  Well, this has been a really out of it last few days.  I went over to Omamari beach (named after the Mamari waka, canoe, which capsized there) and stayed with my whanau (family).  I went to our marae and we had a hui (meeting).  Overall it went well.  I told the whanau (family) about the movie and one of them (Mihi) said she would like to come on board to help.
Top has made a basic shooting schedule and also drawn up a production plan, so that is good.  She is figuring out the costs at the moment.
I have decided to go hard out sending emails off to as many potential investors etc as possible.  The sooner this trailer can be made the better.  I am dead keen on actually filming the movie, however, that is a long way off yet.  Even if I had the finances (millions) it would still not be ready to film until quite a while.
I am going to film the trailer on a skeleton crew, however quality will NOT suffer.  Two of the key areas is lighting and sound.  So I will be having a professional cinematographer on board for the trailer, who will also help with the feature.
Jade has kindly let me use the resources at her classroom to edit stuff for the footage I have been taking for the Whangarei TV station.  I downloaded some footage for over 1 hr just now...and it was ALL lost!
I hope to find out about my bizzo grant this week.
As for Shifty & Shorty, it may not be happening.  No actors and actresses!  Whangarei is just so ho-ha at times.
I have only sent off ten emails to different maori businesses (for my trailer) and two responded.  One offered a pure Arabian white stallion with one eye for Tana Tu!  Ka pai!  That will be so cool!  The other contacted one of my referees to ask about whether or not I am straight up and if I can finish the film.  The answer to that is...only dropping down dead will stop me!!!  Ha ha ha.  The reality is, things are progressing well overall.  Top is doing the production budget/schedule; Two drafts of the script have been written (I am working on the third); The website is up and running;  I have a white Arabian stallion!; Mihi has come on board.  The main thing now is to raise the putea...so I will get on to sending as many emails as possible.  I will ask Top and Mihi to help me in this matter.  Plus I will be soliciting the tautoko of Maori organizations around town.
